Aproveché que organizaban en la huerta una «sestaferia» (trabajo comunal entre vecinos) con motivo del Día Internacional de la Lucha Campesina. Esa semana, en Asturias se organizan diversos actos, en los que La Soberanía Alimentaria es el tema principal.

I took advantage of the fact that they organized a «sestaferia» (communal work among neighbors) in the orchard on the occasion of the International Day of Farmer Struggle. That week, in Asturias various events are organized, in which Food Sovereignty is the main theme.

Antes de tener la huerta, me dedicaba a ir al supermercado y comprar allí la mayoría de los productos que consumía. A día de hoy, mis hábitos alimenticios han cambiado de manera sustancial. Ahora me preocupo mucho más por conocer la procedencia de los productos que consumo; suelo comprar fruta y verdura en los mercados y fruterías, donde sé que, la mayoría de lo que compras, es de la zona, y aunque no tengan el certificado «orgánico», confías en la palabra del hortelano/a cuando te dice que son productos ecológicos. También compro en tiendas de productos orgánicos; ya sé que son más caros, pero prefiero que sea mi economía la que se resienta, y no mi salud. Comprendo que aún me queda mucho por aprender a consumir productos orgánicos, ya que poco a poco, me voy dando cuenta de que no sólo soy responsable de mi alimentación, sino que también soy responsable de sostenibilidad de la naturaleza.

Before I had the garden, I used to go to the supermarket and buy most of the products. Today, my eating habits have changed substantially. Now I worry much more about knowing the origin of the products I consume; I buy fruits and vegetables in the local markets and fruit shops, where, I know that, most of what you buy, it’s from the area, and even if they do not have the «organic» certificate, you trust the shop keeper’s words when they say that are organic products. I also buy at organic stores; I know they are more expensive, but I prefer that it is my economy that resents, not my health. I understand that I still have a lot to learn to consume organic products, because little by little, I realize that I am not only responsible for my food, but also responsible for the sustainability of nature.

Para mí, el término de «soberanía alimentaria» empieza a tener sentido desde que empiezo a trabajar la huerta. El mejor producto, el de mi huerta, y después, el de la huerta más cercana, y así sucesivamente. Creo que con esto, explico todo lo que quiero transmitir.

For me, the concept «food sovereignty» has begun to make me sense since I started working the garden. The best product, the one of my orchard, and the second one, the one of the nearest orchard, and so on. I think with this, I explain everything I want to convey.

Pues bien, ese día en La Brañina, conocimos algo más sobre estos temas, y además nos contaron cosas interesantes acerca de cómo empezaron con el huerto y cómo funcionan. Aprovecho para agradecerles toda su amabilidad y su disposición.

Personalmente, la huerta me ha ayudado muchísimo a solucionar problemas de salud, y gracias a ir conociendo estos huertos urbanos, empiezo a darme cuenta del poder curativo que también tienen para las comunidades que sufren, en este caso, la existencia de un terreno abandonado en el barrio.

Personally, the garden has helped me a lot to solve health problems, and thanks to going to know these urban gardens, I begin to realize the healing power they also have for communities suffering, in this case, the existence of abandoned land in the neighborhood.
