Bitxo, la ilustradora de La Huerta de la Esquina, me avisó de que la Asociación «En Construcción» de Avilés, estaba buscando gente para participar en un curso sobre como las huertas urbanas ayudan a jóvenes con dificultades sociales, y a refugiados, a integrarse en la sociedad. Fui seleccionado, y a las dos semanas, puse rumbo a Berlín. El curso estaba financiado por la Unión Europea, en un programa llamado Erasmus +.
Bitxo, the illustrator of La Huerta de la Esquina, told me that «En Construcción» Association of Avilés, it was looking for people to participate in a course on how urban gardens helps young people with social difficulties, and refugees, to integrate into society. I was accepted, and for two weeks, I went to Berlin. The course was funded by the European Union in a program called Erasmus +.
Desde el inicio, las facilitadoras pusieron especial énfasis en el trabajo de grupo, donde cada persona tenía que sentirse importante e integrada. A partir de ahí, todos los grupos formaban «una comunidad», la cual fue el principal objeto de estudio. Digamos que la primera pregunta del curso fue ¿Qué es una comunidad?.
From the beginning, the facilitators put special emphasis on group work, where each person had to feel important and integrated. From there, all groups formed «a community», which was the main object of study. Let’s say the first question of the course was: What is a community?.

De los siete días que duró el curso, seis los pasamos en el campo, en una casa destinada a colectivos y asociaciones que organizan este tipo de cursos. A Berlín solo fuimos un día a visitar «Tempelhof» el aeropuerto abandonado, y un centro de acogida de refugiados llamado «Marienfelder», donde están desarrollando un huerto urbano. En el vídeo que grabé en el aeropuerto abandonado, se puede ver un momento en el que hago un zoom y una panorámica hacia un edificio enorme, pues bien, ese es el antiguo edificio del aeropuerto en el cual viven 3.000 refugiados. Una chica berlinesa me contó que Hitler tenía pensado construir un «megaedificio» con la forma del águila de la bandera alemana; sólo pudo construir ese edificio, que es el equivalente al pico de una de las alas del águila.
Of the seven days that the course lasted, six of them, we spent in the field, in a house destined to groups and associations that organize this type of courses. To Berlin we only went one day to visit «Tempelhof», the abandoned airport; and a refugee shelter called «Marienfelder», where they are developing an urban vegetable garden. In the video I recorded at the abandoned airport, you can see a moment when I zoom in and out, to a huge building, that’s the old airport building in which 3,000 refugees live. A Berlin woman told me that Hitler was planning to build a «mega-building» with the shape of the German flag eagle; He could only build that building, that is the equivalent to the peak of one of the eagle’s wings.
